Dena’s small town roots prompted one of her art professors to comment that her work expresses a love of intimate, quiet, and peaceful spaces. She enjoys the richness and texture of painting with oils. Her work has been described as “impressionistic realism.”
“For me, painting is not about duplicating reality. When I paint, I re-design reality to evoke emotion using a purposeful visual approach.”
An award-winning artist, Dena’s paintings have been exhibited in regional, national, and international shows, including the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Her work hangs in private collections throughout the United States. She received her art training at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Students League of Denver, and the Scottsdale Artists School, where she was honored to be selected for the prestigious Wade Fairchild Memorial Scholarship. Teachers and mentors include Kevin MacPherson, Quang Ho, Matt Smith, Jay Moore, and Kevin Weckbach. She is a signature member of Women Artists of the West and an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America and Plein Air Artists Colorado. Dena recently completed a painted heart sculpture designed for the Loveland Visual Arts Commission for the city of Loveland’s permanent collection, Loveland A City with HeArt. Her first love is plein-air painting, though she also paints and teaches in her Loveland, Colorado studio. Her studio work and plein-air paintings can be seen at Muhlestein Fine Art Gallery in Loveland, CO, and at www.denakirk.com .
